Hoku Ryu Bonsai

“A good bonsai tree will let you see what's there and not there at the same time.” - Dick Matthews

Bonsai is an ancient Asian art form that involves the care and cultivation of living artistic sculpture of trees and other plants. Bonsai seeks to replicate the beauty found in nature on a miniature scale. The term bonsai literally translates as "plant in a tray" and conveys the sleek, graceful lines of a tree or plant that has been shaped, pruned, and potted to look as though it were growing in the wild, rather than in a home garden container. Some specimen trees in bonsai collections can live for hundreds of years and are passed on from generation to generation. Due to their potential long lifespan, bonsai can be an artistic hobby that evolves with a person for a lifetime.

I have been studying and practicing the art of bonsai for over 35 years. Some might say that qualifies me as a "Bonsai Master." However, I believe that I am a "Bonsai Servant" who attends to the needs of my trees with the best of my skills in this craft.
